Fleet
Our fleet is made up of six Fireflys, some Laser 2s and an Enterprise.
Fireflys
The main focus of university sailing is team racing and the Firefly is the most commonly boat used. The Firefly is a 12ft dinghy that has very good sailing characteristics; rolls well, good acceleration and turns quickly which makes it an ideal team racing boat, but also as a dinghy for general sailing. For more info see the Firefly Association Website: http://www.fireflysailing.org.uk/index.php.
Laser 2s
The club owns four Laser 2s. The Laser 2 is an exciting, ISAF recognised, International One Design racing dinghy which is ideal for couples and lighter weight crews (less than 150kg total). The combination of a trapeze for the crew and a large spinnaker ensures exciting sailing. With a tough hull, it works well off any beach, and the traditional spinnaker gives greater flexibility of racing venues and courses than is found with the newer asymmetric dinghies. For more info see the Laser 2 Class Association Website: http://www.laser2sailing.org.uk/.
Enterprise
The Enterprise is a 4 metre sailing dinghy designed by Jack Holt. It is one of the largest classes in the world and this popularity is due to its excellent qualities both as a cruising and a two-man racing boat. There are close to 23,000 registered boats. We use this classic boat for the Southport 24 hour race in September. For more info see the Enterprise Class Association Website: http://www.sailenterprise.org.uk/.
Laser Picos
We also have access to six Picos. The Pico is a popular boat for beginners and competent sailors alike. Many sailing schools use Picos for training whilst the boat is exciting enough for more experienced sailors. They are easy to helm single handedly so are great to sail about in after you’ve got the basics.
