Laser Training Session 17th Apr

Hi guys and girls

I hope you are all having a suitably relaxing easter break.

For those of you who are still around loughborough next weekend, Burton Sailing club are organising an event for next weekend to rekindle interest in their laser fleet (the same boat as my black one). The message follows.

If anyone is interested in attending this event you can contact mike the organiser at the_hamptons@tiscali.co.uk and cc me at cvdp4@lboro.ac.uk

.

Thanks

Activate your Laser

This is an RYA initiative that Burton Sailing Club are taking advantage of.

Please join in and have some fun

In brief the “RYA” together with “Laser Performance” want to encourage more people to get active with their sailing. I’m not sure exactly why the emphasis is on lasers but it is a known fact that a large number of lasers are only infrequently sailed.  Sometimes this is because the laser is a second boat, sometimes because the owner’s interest has waned or because they feel that they may not enjoy mixing it in handicap fleet sailing, and sometimes it is because their boat is in need of improving.

We at the club can get a lot of benefits from the RYA and Laser Performance and in so doing have fun getting more lasers out sailing.

Our first proposal is a “Get Back on the Water / Laser Clinic” day

Ø      This will be on Saturday the 17th April.

Ø      It is free to any club member.

Ø      We will be supported by a Senior RYA Race Coach and a Coach/expert from Laser Performance.

Ø      Laser are offering equipment at great discounts including DX gear for up to half price.

Ø      Laser will bring several new boats for anyone to use.

The day will kick off at around 10.00am in the boat park as follows:

  1. Start off with looking at everyone’s laser and talking about what could be done to it from set up to new equipment. (DX fittings are likely to be the main thing but also some may need other improvements, from simple new bung or bailer to rope packs and one or two of us probably would want to invest in a new sail.)
  2. Help with rigging correctly and tuning tips. (Emphasis on using controls for differing points of sail, wind strength, etc.)
  3. Some fun on the water training exercises, taken from the RYA Race Coaching booklet. (The chance to try a new laser would be good here.)
  4. A couple of short races.  (Emphasis on fun, close sailing but simplified rules.)
  5. Beer and chat. (To fix what happens next, encourage coming to next Wednesday’s race, etc.)

I am asking anyone who owns or has owned a laser or is even just interested in trying a laser to come along if they can.  Whether you are expert or novice, young or old, prefer to sail other types of boats or not;

We can all have some fun on and off the water.

Please let me know if you can come.

Thanks

Mike Hampton
