Hello all,

Hope everyone’s summer is going well. This is going to be the first of my monthly reports intended to let you know what is happening with your club and committee.

Even though its summer the committee are starting to gear up and prepare for the year ahead. Recently the sponsorship proposal for the fireflies has been updated by myself, Chris George and Dave McArthy. If you know of anyone we can pass it onto please let me know any amount of sponsorship would help us!

You may have also noticed the website is currently in the middle of a revamp of its content. This is being driven by Dave McArthy, if you have any ideas for improvements please drop an email to either myself or Dave.

Important dates coming up are the Southport 24hr Race on 11th-12th September make sure you clear your calendars for it, definitely an event not to be missed!

Again any ideas you have for anything you want the club to do next year or like about last year just drop me an email.

All the Best

Dear Members,

I hope that all of your exams have gone well and you are either home or on your way, for a well earned rest.

Next year looks like it is going to be busy one. We intend to push the club further than ever before by building on the excellent work from the previous year’s committee. Over the summer the committee and I will be working on several things in an attempt to make it the best year yet, with events, stash, courses and much more already in the planning.

On the subject of improvements for the club we are looking for suggestions from everyone. Big or small ideas, we will look at and consider them all. So any ideas either give me a buzz or drop me an email.

A big thank you to Dave McArthy for organising the level 1 and 2 RYA course last weekend. It sounds to have been a success by all accounts and we are looking to repeat this success in the future. Another thank you to the previous year’s committee you have done a fantastic job at expanding and improving the club. We have a lot to do to match the achievements of the past year.

I look forward to seeing most of you next year and to those who have finished their degree all the best for the future, I expect we will see you around don’t forget the date for the Lemming (4th – 5th December) we will need an old boys/gals team!

Hi,

This is just a quick email to let you know about another event that we’ll be attending in the summer… The West Lancashire Yacht Club 24 Hour Race. The event is a long way off yet but I’m letting you know now so you can make a note in your diaries.

The Southport event is a 24 hour race non stop through the night in our Enterprise. The Ent takes a crew of two and we changeover every couple of hours so we can have a rest and get some sleep. We arrive on Friday 10th September to pitch our tents and then into the marquee for the party. The race starts at midday on Saturday 11th and we leave Sunday afternoon.

No experience in the Ent is necessary to sail, but for anyone who might not want to sail this weekend this is a great social event with bbq, dj etc. so if you’ve got the weekend free you should come for the party anyway, as well as a chance to catch up with some of the old boys.

Keep checking you emails over the summer for more news. You don’t need to let me know yet if you’re interested in coming, we’ll sort that out nearer the time but if you want to know any more about it now then send me an email: D.McCarthy-06@student.lboro.ac.uk

Dear Members of the Loughborough Students Sailing and Windsurfing Club

.

Hasn’t the last 9 months gone quickly. I hope you have all had an enjoyable time with the club this year. The Committee and I have been working tirelessly to offer a huge variety of experiences. We have also successfully increased the membership this year and have cemented our position as one of the larger AU clubs. Social sailing has been very well organised and we have laid the foundations for great things in the coming years. Many of you have learnt to sail and good luck to those of you who will be doing your RYA qualifications this weekend.

.

The club has sent teams to several events during the course of the year. Hopefully some of you have fond memories of the Leeds Halloween Howler, which for many of you was your first experience of team racing not to mention partying until 4am and getting up to go sailing at 730.

.

We have competed at all the BUCS competitions this year from the fake Weymouth at Queen Mary to the Match Racing out of Cowes over Easter and the Windsurfers who attended their nationals just after Easter. Well done to all the members of these teams for representing Loughborough on the national stage with dignity and respect, (huhmm) mostly. Special mention to Emma Shrimpton for placing well at the windsurfing nationals, and also to the Yachting team for reacting quickly and calmly when they needed to recover a man overboard in the Solent.

.

On the social scene, thank you to Jenni Burt for ensuring I have seen among others, golfers, zoo animals and some cowboys and Indians (remembering that Ghandi was also an Indian); all trying to disguise the fact they are actually sailors. Well done to everyone who came along and I can’t wait to see what we get next year.

.

Our event, the Lufbra Lemming was held in December and I want to thank everyone involved, especially Simon Gadd and Jenni Burt, in making it the success it was. We raised in the region of £1000 for the club.

.

Finally I would like to express my gratitude to the outgoing committee for their efforts in making my life easier and ensuring that this has been a brilliant year for Sailing at Loughborough.

.

I hope everyone has a safe and enjoyable summer and I look forward to seeing you all again next year.

Dear all,

I am an MSc Exercise Physiology student in the School of Sport, Exercise, and Health Sciences and I am currently recruiting participants for my research project investigation exercise-induced asthma.

The inclusion critieria are as follows:

- Male or Female
- Aged 18+
- Experiences asthma related symptoms (cough, wheeze, shortness of breath) when exercising

The study requires just one visit to the physiology laboratory to complete the following:

- measurement of exhaled Nitric Oxide (literally just breathing into a tube)
- some measurements of lung function (literally just breathing into another tube)
- the completion of two exercise tests which last no longer than 10 min each.
- provision of a sputum and urine sample.

All of these procedures are non-invasive and in total the testing will take up around 2 hours of your time.

I need around 30 subjects for this study so your help would be greatly appreciated!

If you would like to participate or would like any further information please do not hesitate to contact Mark Evans at M.R.Evans-09@student.lboro.ac.uk. Please read the attached participant information sheet for more details about the study.

Thank you

Hi all, please see below an email from Burton SC for a club regatta this weekend.

The Regatta Event is now confirmed for this weekend 19/20 June. This
should be a great two days sailing primarily for club members as the
event has not been advertised outside of the club (we might get the
odd one or two members). OK OK it’s not been advertised that well
within the club either…….!

The format will be informal. The first race on the Saturday will not
be before 1PM and we will have either 2 or 3 handicap races depending
on wind conditions.

We will have a bring your own food BBQ on the Saturday evening.

On the Sunday we will have the annual Ernie Hewkin Memorial race at
11AM. For those that do not know this is a handicap in reverse, where
the slow boats start first and the fast boats last in such a manner
that the fleet converges until a set time elapsed at which point the
position in the race is your result. Great fun!

After Lunch we will have two handicap races on the normal Sunday start
times.

The regatta results will be based on the Saturday races and the two
Sunday races with one discarded result.

Lets make it a big turnout of club members. We had 55 boats on the
water last weekend lest see how many club boats we can get out.
Remember the club has quite a variety of boats to try if you fancy a
change from a flying fifteen (like getting wet for once). New members
and Novices from the courses come down and take part please.

I will get a proper Notice of Race on the website soon.
