Committee positions for election

Hi All,

For those interested in running for the club committee, here’s a bit of blurb from the current members as to what each position entails…

  • Commodore
The Commodore has overall responsibility for all aspects of the club. They have to provide positive leadership and ensure the committee functions effectively and efficiently. They are responsible for chairing meetings and liaising with the AU and RYA concerning issues that may arise. Through use of delegation and a proactive committee the commodore need not have a direct hand in the day to day running of the club.
  • Vice-commodore
The role of the Vice Commodore of LSSWC is a general one and involves assisting the Commodore with the day to day management of the club and its activities. Specifically, the VC will be expected to organise Wednesday social sailing activities each week and also to assist in general running issues on a daily basis. The role is a time consuming one requiring good time management and commitment, however at the same time it can be rewarding and fun!
  • Treasurer
Ok lets face it, sailing is an expensive sport!
As a treasurer you are in control of the funds given every year from the union!
This involves sorting out membership fees, paying for events, insurance and also the maintenance of our beautiful fleet!
You liaise between the AU Finance officer (Claire) and the sailing committee.
Without money there is no sailing! Simple!
  • Secretary
The club secretary looks after the administration of the club, mainly preparing for committee meetings with agendas, room bookings where appropriate and taking minutes, leasing with the AU administrator Rebecca.
The secretary keeps track of current members (contact details etc) and is the first contract for prospective member emails.
  • Social Sec
Being the Social Sec of the Sailing and Windsurfing committee mainly involves organising events to bring together the whole club and to make sure that everyone gets to know each other. From organising nights out to Hey Ewe, to Christmas dinners and meals out. You have to work with the Union and Nightclubs to get the best deals for groups of people. One of the main tasks the role involves is organising the Friday and Saturday night socials and meals for our team racing even in December. This means booking tables, sorting menus, getting entry, queue-jump and wristbands for over 100 people. It is also part of the Social Sec’s role to design and organise the social Stash for the whole club, getting ideas of what people want and ordering it.
  • Racing Captain
My job involves organising the racing/competition side of the sailing club. It’s my responsibility to arrange team racing training sessions in preparation for events such as the ‘Brunel Badger’, ‘Liverpool Lash’ etc, as well as BUSA events. This also involves entering the teams into the competitions, which in case of BUCS means liasing with the AU office and BUSA themselves to sort out entry fees and damage deposits (yes I admit, I have forgotten the odd damage deposit!). Also, I have to pick the teams, i.e. helms and crews, and occasionally get involved with organising travel to and from events. I’ve tried to get more people into racing and also regular teams racing, but there is still definitely more to do! You should apply for this position if you enjoy racing (and experience obviously helps when picking teams and training), are enthusiastic, good at organising people and don’t mind sending out lots of emails! Good luck!
  • Women’s Racing Captain
The women’s team racing captain works closely with and in a similar role to the club racing captain to train the women’s team.
  • Windsurfing Captain
My job covers all things windsurf both at the club and through the Student Windsurf Association. This includes ensuring our kit is usable and accessible as well as organising Loughborough’s participation in the SWA weekend events throughout the year. When it comes to BUCS events you will need to liaise with the AU office. Beyond the club,  you will be known as the Loughborough President and it is your responsibility to manage all SWA dealings, such as event entries and damage deposits, in addition you will be required to meet with other presidents (this usually takes place at the end of events) to discuss how the year is going and what can be improved to offer a better experience through the event series. Once or twice a year you will be required to attend an SWA training weekend for President Training or AGM. You should apply for this position if you’re organised, are confident meeting and talking to you people and love and are dedicated to windsurfing.
  • Yachting Captain
The yachting captain organises the BUCS yacting championships as well as other yachting trips through the year.
  • Bosun
The responsibility of the up keep and repair of the boats and general equipment. This role requires the canidate to look after the very precious Fireflys and to swear to look after them. Do what you can for the laser II’s and the ent. You will spend most of the budget and be required to work with the treasurer. Work to be carried out on the equipment is normally assited by the club members, the main thing is to facilitate the work and to procure the parts.
  • Event Coordinator
The club’s annual sailing event which was held this year in December is organised, promoted and run by the event coordinator. This position involves contacting other university sailing teams and other organisations such as BUSA, RYA, Burton SC, caterers, nightclubs etc. to prepare the event. This position does not require you to do it all yourself…coordinate the rest of the committee to help in each area.

If you are interested in taking over (or sharing) one of these positions please reply or speak to Kiwi before Monday 15th about getting involved in running the club.
